Mavis said she didn’t know how long she would be staying. But that was not entirely true. She knew what she was going to do, and it didn’t involve continuing to stay in that house. Henry hadn’t understood why she was leaving him, but that was too bad. She understood.

The night before, when she had been sitting in the easy chair praying for an answer, God had finally come through for her. She’d felt a strange sense of relief as she’d let the teardrops slide down her cheeks, and afterward, she could see things much clearer.

She recognized her situation for what it was. She had a marriage that seemed to produce only loneliness within her, an estranged daughter who was distant not just in terms of miles but in the heart as well, and a granddaughter living under her roof who she didn’t even know how to talk to.

She had not reached out to her, or anyone, for that matter. She had not made any attempts to right any of the things that were wrong; not with Henry, who, by his own right, was just as guilty as she was. Or Ida, who was also not blameless. But that was not the point. They had all been wrong. Who was going to take the first step?

She could not escape the haunting guilt that she had not done right by Ida. And God forgive her, for while she had never used physical punishment with Tia the way she had with Ida, she had definitely allowed history to repeat itself by becoming emotionally unavailable to her in the same way she had been years earlier with Ida. It was time for a change. Tomorrow she would visit her daughter.
